The central entrance area of the new school campus impressively demonstrates how ambitious architecture and precise structural engineering work hand in hand. The aim was to create maximum openness and spatial generosity – without visible columns in the entrance area. This is made possible by a complex load-bearing structure that absorbs, redirects and reliably transfers enormous forces into the main structural system.
Vierendeel Girder with a Span of Over 10 Metres
A key element of the structure is the Vierendeel girder with a span of more than 10 metres. It enables a completely column-free entrance area and creates the basis for an open, bright and representative entrance situation.
What will later appear architecturally light and effortless is currently still visible as a highly complex structural system: massive components, precise reinforcement detailing and a carefully coordinated interaction of all load-bearing elements.
Complex Column Offset of More Than 1.0 Metre
A particular technical challenge is the column offset of more than 1.0 metre. The resulting forces are absorbed by a highly stressed transfer slab and directed precisely into the main structural system.
This construction fulfils a crucial role: it ensures that the loads from the storeys above are redirected in a controlled manner and permanently transferred safely.
Three Upper Storeys Safely Supported
Following the controlled load transfer, the structural system will permanently carry the loads of three upper storeys. It therefore forms an essential part of the overall building concept and demonstrates the planning precision behind architecture that will later appear effortless.
The structure is currently still surrounded by the temporary forest of props and shoring. This construction stage offers an impressive insight into the creation of modern structural engineering – before these technical achievements later disappear behind finishes, interiors and everyday use.
